Sea View House Doolin

Niall & Darra's Story

The Hughes have been looking after guests and creating great experiences here in Doolin for over twenty years. Doolin-born Darra learned hospitality in one of Doolin’s first farmhouse bed and breakfasts, which her parents opened on their farm in the 1970s. Darra has always had a close link with the farm and as a child she would rise early to bring the cows in for milking and collect freshly-laid eggs for her mother’s guests, a tradition that is still carried on today. Niall first came to Doolin from Tipperary in his twenties and fell in love with the place, the people, the music, the Atlantic Ocean and the Aran Islands. Two years later he fell in love again and married Darra right here in Doolin Village. In the Irish tradition, Darra’s father gifted a plot of land to the newlyweds where their dream of Sea View House was realised and their house was built to take advantage of the outstanding views from deck and terraces overlooking the Aille River and the Atlantic Ocean.

Sea View House has evolved into the award winning Bed and Breakfast and Luxury Lodges that welcome you to today. With high standards and a passion for local produce, which has gained us recognition, in our eyes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s why we personally prepare our guests’ fresh and sustaining breakfast every morning using some of the best raw ingredients in the world. Not only is Niall a keen cook and gardener, he’s also an accomplished horseman and carries on the tradition of the family farm where Darra’s grandfather kept Irish Draught and thoroughbred stallions.

Our Responsibilities

We are committed to reducing the impact our business and family have on the environment. Our policy is not a marketing ploy, it has grown with us over the years as we have come to understand the impact we can have on the environment. To this end we are committed to taking the following action.

  • To achieve sound environmental practices across our entire operation.
  • To produce an annual Environmental Plan setting out our Objectives, Targets and planned Actions.
  • To comply fully with all relevant legislation.
  • To minimise our waste and reduce our water consumption where possible.
  • To reduce, Reuse, Recycle the resources consumed by our business wherever practical.
  • To invite our customers, suppliers and contractors to participate in our efforts to protect the environment.
  • To provide all employees with the training and resources required to meet our objectives.
  • To openly communicate our policies and practices to interested parties.
  • To monitor and record our environmental impacts on a regular basis and compare our performance with our policies, objectives and targets.

Furthermore we draw water from our own well, topping up from a mains supply only when necessary. We have taken steps to improve lower energy consumption throughout our properites, installing a super efficient condensing boiler, LED bulbs on motion-sensitive lighting, both inside and out, solar panels to heat our hot water supply and energy efficient log burning stoves have replaced traditional coal types. We have replaced our own vehicles with plug-in Electric Hybrid Vehicles and are pleased to offer EV-Charger points to our guests, if required.

As a result of our environmental committments we have reduced the amount of waste destined for landfill by more than 50% since 2008 and it is our plan to reduce our recycling weight to 0.11kg per guest night in 2020.
